Apheresis filters reduce levels of some forever chemicals

A new study examined discarded apheresis filter material from a large treatment centre after double-filtration plasmapheresis in 34 patients and found that levels of low-density cholesterol fell and that four named forever chemicals — perfluorooctanoic acid, perfluorooctane sulfonic acid, perfluorononanoic acid, and perfluorohexane sulfonic acid — appeared to decline by up to 25 per cent. The study did not produce a clear result for plastic particle removal and did not prove removal in a controlled clinical trial; authors plan labelled animal imaging studies and stress prevention of exposure remains the priority.
