Prime minister calls three federal byelections
2 min read

Prime Minister Mark Carney announced Aug. 31 byelections in North Vancouver—Capilano, Beaches—East York and Chicoutimi—Le Fjord to replace MPs who left their seats, including Jonathan Wilkinson (now ambassador to the EU), Nathaniel Erskine-Smith and Richard Martel (appointed to the Senate). The Liberals will run Braeden Caley, Tanveer Shahnawaz and Daniel Gobeil in those ridings. With current counts and expected resignations, the Liberals need to win at least one seat to retain a technical majority in the House; the outcome will therefore influence parliamentary control when MPs return after summer.
Byelection results will determine whether Liberals keep technical majority.
