IEC clears 136,790 candidates for November local elections
South Africa's Electoral Commission finalised 136,790 candidates for the November 4 local government elections after disqualifying 5,096 nominations, the IEC said. Candidates will compete for 10,526 seats across metropolitan, district and local municipalities, with about 98,000 party-nominated ward candidates, 38,000 proportional representation candidates and 621 independents. High contestation in metros — Johannesburg has 75 parties on the PR ballot and Ward 18 has 63 ward candidates — will affect ballot design.
