Colombia to close 14 embassies and 15 consulates

Colombia's president-elect Abelardo de la Espriella announced a major diplomatic overhaul that will close 14 embassies and 15 consulates, while also severing diplomatic ties with Cuba and Nicaragua. The plan includes closing missions in Hungary, the Czech Republic, Romania, Algeria, Barbados, Ethiopia, Haiti, Senegal and South Africa, reopening an embassy in Jerusalem, and opening a new embassy in Nigeria. De la Espriella said the moves will cut bureaucracy costs and fund priorities such as security, health, education and infrastructure, and he plans a technical audit of missions during his first 100 days in office.
