Alaska sends thousands of citizenship verification letters to voters

Alaska election officials mailed roughly 3,048 letters asking voters to affirm citizenship after comparing the voter roll with Division of Motor Vehicles records, a much larger number than the division's usual roughly 200 names for review. Officials say the division did not require documentation and moved recipients to an inactive list while still allowing a special ballot option if they do not respond. State lawmakers and voters complained some recipients are citizens, and the DMV described the request as a "non-routine" check of about 15,200 records.
