NAFDAC finds methanol, cannabis in Ondo concoctions linked to deaths
The national regulator reported that tests on 15 unlabelled locally prepared alcoholic and herbal samples linked to mass illness in Ondo state found high concentrations of methanol and Cannabis indica; 11 of 15 samples tested positive for cannabis and gas chromatography confirmed high methanol. As of September 17, 2026, authorities recorded 48 deaths, 182 illnesses, and seven people rendered blind (five totally and two partially). Clinical cases included visual disturbance and rapid deterioration, with 90 admitted then discharged, 31 outpatients, and six still hospitalized; 15 people have been arrested and confirmatory analyses are ongoing.
