France records 5,764 excess deaths during June heat wave

France's public health agency estimated 5,764 excess deaths from all causes during a heat wave from June 17 to July 2, with more than half occurring between June 25 and June 27 and two-thirds among people aged 75 and older. Temperatures broke records, reaching about 43.8°C in Saintes and 40.1°C in Paris, and excess mortality was higher in hotter regions, including nearly 2,000 excess deaths in Île-de-France. The estimate is preliminary, drawn from administrative data without causes of death, and will be checked by a fuller end-of-summer report; EuroMOMO reported more than 10,000 excess deaths across Europe.
