TV academies open talks to reunify after 1977 split

The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) and the Television Academy announced exploratory talks about reunifying after five decades apart. Both boards voted overwhelmingly to evaluate a unified academy, and the Television Academy extended current Governors' terms by one year to maintain continuity. The organizations trace their split to 1977, when Primetime and other Emmy jurisdictions were divided, and later legal fights over awards jurisdiction followed. In recent years the two groups aligned category responsibilities, created joint membership for several peer groups, and moved several Emmy categories; a reunification could further centralize awards governance and broaden member services.

Both academies have begun formal exploration of reunification talks.
