Poland picks Fatherland as its Oscar international entry
Poland has selected 'Fatherland,' Paweł Pawlikowski's black-and-white post-World War II drama starring Sandra Hüller, as its entry in the international feature category for the 99th Academy Awards. The film follows Thomas Mann (Hanns Zischler) and his daughter Erika (Hüller) on a 1949 road trip and premiered in competition at Cannes, where Pawlikowski won the Best Director award. Written by Pawlikowski and Henk Handloegten, it features August Diehl, Devid Striesow and Anna Madeley, and was mainly shot in Poland despite being set in Germany. The selection puts the film into the Oscar race ahead of the December shortlist and January nominations.
