Government unveils industry-led subjects for senior secondary students

The government will introduce a set of industry-led and ministry-developed subjects for Year 12 and 13 students from 2029, part of a new qualification system replacing NCEA. Under the new rules students must study at least five subjects each year and pass a minimum of three to gain the qualification, replacing credit accumulation across standards. The ministry worked with Industry Skill Boards and received $15 million in Budget 2026 support. Delivery models may include specialist tutors from polytechnics or private training providers, and the change intends to link schooling more directly to workforce needs.

New industry-led subjects will start in 2029 for Year 12–13 students.
