Government unveils industry-led subjects for senior secondary students
The government will introduce a set of industry-led and ministry-developed subjects for Year 12 and 13 students from 2029, part of a new qualification system replacing NCEA. Under the new rules students must study at least five subjects each year and pass a minimum of three to gain the qualification, replacing credit accumulation across standards. The ministry worked with Industry Skill Boards and received $15 million in Budget 2026 support.
