UN reports 1,004 sexual violence cases in Russia-Ukraine war
The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights analyzed 1,004 cases of sexual violence occurring from 24 February 2022 through 31 July 2023, based on interviews, court records and other materials. The report verified 892 victims and attributed about 89% of incidents to Russian actors and 11% to Ukrainian actors, noting use of rape, sexual torture, forced nudity and humiliation against prisoners of war and civilians. Victims ranged from age 4 to 82, with most verified victims male and concentrated in detention. The report prompted UN-level attention and calls for protection and investigation.
Most documented sexual violence was attributed to Russian forces.
