South Korea arrests scam ring operating in Kazakhstan

South Korean investigators, working with Kazakh authorities, arrested 14 members of a South Korean scam ring in Almaty on July 23 and five others in South Korea, the KNPA said. The group set up a call center in Almaty after moving from Cambodia via Vietnam and used voice phishing and text-message fraud, impersonating government agencies to swindle about 600 million won from 16 domestic victims. The 14 arrested in Kazakhstan were repatriated to South Korea between July 28 and the present, marking the first direct South Korean apprehension of a ring operating from Central Asia.
