Rome court convicts three Egyptian security officials for kidnapping of Italian student

A Rome court on Monday sentenced three Egyptian security officials to ten years in prison in absentia for the aggravated kidnapping of Giulio Regeni, a 28-year-old Cambridge doctoral student whose tortured body was found near Cairo in 2016; a fourth defendant was acquitted. Italian prosecutors concluded the national security agency was involved, while Egyptian authorities blamed criminal gangs and denied state responsibility. The trial had been suspended until Italy's Constitutional Court allowed it to proceed in September 2023, and although extradition is considered unlikely, the convictions could renew diplomatic tensions between Italy and Egypt.
