Myanmar parliament approves law allowing death penalty for scam centre abuses

On July 28 Myanmar's military-backed parliament approved the Anti-Online Scam Bill, which authorises capital punishment and long prison terms for people who detain, coerce or torture victims into working at online scam centres, the speaker said. The combined lower and upper house meeting in Naypyidaw kept the death sentence, an MP confirmed, and a published draft said sentences range from 10 years to life, with life for running scam centres and crypto scams. The law targets proliferating internet fraud factories and trafficking that have grown amid the civil war, and is the new government's first legislation.
