UniCredit moves to seize control of Commerzbank
UniCredit is preparing to press for control of Commerzbank as soon as it secures remaining approvals from the European Central Bank, the European Commission and Poland’s regulator, with a base-case timeline by end-February and a best-case in January. The Milan group plans to call an extraordinary general meeting, replace all 10 shareholder supervisory board members, remove CEO Bettina Orlopp, unwind roughly €20bn of non-core corporate loans and cut costs including about 7,000 jobs. Berlin, which holds near-13 percent of Commerzbank, has softened opposition but set conditions such as keeping the Frankfurt headquarters and listing.
