U.S. and Canada agree to open Gordie Howe bridge

The Gordie Howe International Bridge, a $4.7 billion, six-lane cable-stayed crossing between Windsor and Detroit, is set to open on July 27 after the United States and Canada struck a deal on toll governance and revenue sharing. Canada financed the 1.49-mile project that aims to ease traffic on the Ambassador Bridge, which handled $126 billion in commercial truck trade in 2023. A University of Windsor study estimates the new crossing will save trucks $2.3 billion over 30 years by cutting minutes from crossing times. The opening follows political tensions, including U.S. threats to block the bridge and disputes over tariffs and trade rules.

The Gordie Howe bridge will open on July 27.
