Samsung to start Yongin chip plant operations in 2029

Samsung Electronics is moving to begin operations at the first semiconductor fabrication plant in its Yongin chip cluster in 2029, one to two years earlier than earlier plans, according to industry sources. The accelerated timeline follows government efforts to speed development of the Yongin National Industrial Complex, a national strategic project that will host six plants. Samsung's broader mega project investment plan includes 2,030 trillion won for Pyeongtaek and Yongin clusters and 400 trillion won for two new Gwangju plants, a shift that should expand production capacity for AI-focused chips and affect global supply dynamics.

Samsung will start the first Yongin fab in 2029
